Listening to this great speech by former NY State Governor Mario Cuomo at the DNC Convention in 1984 – this was a battle that was thoroughly lost. Now some 27 yrs later we see the consequences; A corrupt and destroyed Republic.
Whole clip is good – highlights from 3:30 and out.
A couple of quotes:
In fact, Mr. President, this is a nation — Mr. President you ought to know that this nation is more a “Tale of Two Cities” than it is just a “Shining City on a Hill.”
You know, the Republicans called it “trickle-down” when Hoover [in 1929] tried it. Now they call it “supply side.” But it’s the same shining city for those relative few who are lucky enough to live in its good neighborhoods. But for the people who are excluded, for the people who are locked out, all they can do is stare from a distance at that city’s glimmering towers.
We — We have in the last few years spent more than we can afford. [..] That – That is the Republican record. That its disastrous quality is not more fully understood by the American people I can only attribute to the President’s amiability and the failure by some to separate the salesman from the product.
