NY Gov Cuomo joins the final lap of Obama 2012…

The often labeled next-after-Hillary favorite for Democratic Candidate in 2016, Gov. Andrew Cuomo of NY has held a very low profile during this campaign… no spotlight at the convention in September… and no national media…

That seems to be changing now – which is brilliant timing and planning by Cuomo…

NY Gov Cuomo Will stump for Obama…..

Mr. Cuomo with Mr. Obama at the State University of New York at Albany in May….

It’s NEVER too late, Eh?

The below the radar New York State Governor , that could very well run in 2016, has been pressed into service by the Obama campaign to spread the word about the President in swing states.

Of course this will be a coming out thing for Cuomo ……

Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, said Thursday that President Obama’s re-election campaign had asked him to travel outside New York as a surrogate for the president in the final weeks of the race.

But Mr. Cuomo said that nothing he did on Mr. Obama’s behalf should be viewed as evidence that he was laying the groundwork for a presidential run of his own.

Cuomo at 73% approval.

These are crazy numbers – but New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo is starting to look like a rare political talent, effectively pushing through a center/progressive agenda with support from both sides, even raising taxes on high income brackets while keeping folks happy. And working very methodically with both legislature, local politicians and public opinion.

I got this.

From Quinnipiac:

A new Quinnipiac poll finds New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) with a staggering 73% to 16% approval rating, an all-time high.

Perhaps even more striking, Cuomo holds a 69% to 19% approval rate among Republicans.

Hudson Tunnel.. alternatives..

Extension of No. 7 Subway might become the substitute..

From WNYC..

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who refused Tuesday to repay the government $271 million for the canceled Hudson River rail tunnel project, said he is considering another trans-Hudson option: a proposal by Mayor Bloomberg to extend the No. 7 subway line into New Jersey.

“We’re having conversations with Mayor Bloomberg and others regarding the extension of the No. 7 train to Secaucus, New Jersey, which would do what we really wanted the ARC tunnel to do originally,” Christie said in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Tuesday.

Schumer joins the Tunnel debate..

Looks like Gov. Christie’s plans to scrap the tunnel – and use the money elsewhere – is meeting more resistance. Diverting dedicated funds to other projects is not that easily done..

From the CityRoom blog:

“In essence, the governor wants the Port Authority to help fill his budget gap,” Mr. Schumer said in the speech [..]. But, he added, “asking the Port Authority to take capital funds and redirect them on this scale, a scale never before contemplated, would be a mistake that rivals, and perhaps even surpasses the cancellation of the ARC tunnel as a risk to our region’s future.”

As goes Illinois..

Not in large amounts – but they’re going for the cut AND tax medicine.. Income and corporate tax are raised by about 2 points.. Let’s see how this plays out – and how other troubled states like NY, NJ and CA follow up.

From the NyTimes:

For years, Illinois, like so many states, pretended that it had not fallen off a budgetary cliff. It was spending too much and taking in too little revenue, but every year it would kick its problems into the next. Unable to pay its bills, it finally accepted reality last week and raised taxes on incomes and businesses — a first step toward getting its house in order. [..]

With federal stimulus aid ending, states are in for their worst year in generations, and they cannot get out of it by either cutting or taxing alone. Illinois is figuring that out, finally. Too many other states are still in denial.

Cuomo picks Mayor Duffy as running mate.

“I had two basic points that I was looking to fulfill — someone who was ready to be governor of the State of New York if I was incapacitated from the position, and someone who reflects the values and qualities that I want to bring to state government,” Cuomo said. “Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy is that person.”

Former Police Officer Bob Duffy from Rochester.

Cuomo picked the Mayor of Rochester on his merits the last few years.

“[Mayor Duffy] has done in Rochester what we need to do in New York State [..] Get our fiscal house in order, consolidate government, focus on economic development and bring 100 percent integrity and honor back to government. There’s much to do to turn around New York.”

Latest two polls (before announcing his running this weekend) gave Cuomo a +40 spread over Lazio (r). Good readers on Cuomo and Duffy over at PoliticalDog.
