With friends like these

It’s steadily piling up with big name Republicans slamming Romney these days – behaving just like insubordinate Democrats!

Will: He’s hiding something.

On the tax returns:

George Will: “If something’s going to come out, get it out in a hurry. I do not know why, given that Mitt Romney knew the day that McCain lost in 2008 that he was going to run for president again that he didn’t get all of this out and tidy up some of his offshore accounts and all the rest. The cost of not releasing the returns are clear. Therefore, he must have calculated that there are higher costs in releasing them.”

GOP strategist Matthew Dowd: “There’s obviously something there, because if there was nothing there, he would say, ‘Have at it.’ So there’s obviously something there that compromises what he said in the past about something.”

William Kristol: “He should release the tax returns tomorrow. It’s crazy. You gotta release six, eight, 10 years of back tax returns. Take the hit for a day or two.”

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R): “If you have things to hide, then maybe you’re doing things wrong. I think you ought to be willing to release everything to the American people.”

GOP strategist John Weaver: “There is no whining in politics. Stop demanding an apology, release your tax returns.”

Meanwhile, the Democrats are disciplined, in line, on message and consistent on the Bain Pain pile-driver. Welcome to Bizarro World.

  1. this is really strong words from Republicans. And of course, as it becomes increasingly obvious that Romney is hiding something, the calls to release the tax returns will only increase.

Eventually, Romney will agree to release tax returns for some of the more recent years. But there won’t be anything too shocking in them because by that time Romney was already running for President. But Romney will hope that releasing taxes for the last 5 years or so will end the calls for other years. it won’t.

  2. This Bain thing is really hurting him. Ditto the tax returns thing. I am simply astonished that after running for office all these years that he wasn’t ready to resopnd to this stuff immediately!

And zreebs, if there’s nothing in the returns that could hurt him, why in heavens name didn’t he just put them out there like the otehrs do and then it wouldn’t have been an issue. Now it’s an issue. And it’s hurting.

    • Yes indeed. And it seems so amateurish – but it’s also a display of corporate management style meeting reality. It’s not pretty.

  3. most likely, the tax returns would contradict something Romney has said or they have some very embarrassing revelation. The GOP operatives took a lot of heat of avoiding questions this morning/afternoon on the talk shows. the only response that Romney has is that he is not legally required to release them. What a flimsy argument!

I agree with you Moe. Romney has been running for President for six years. it is amateurish that he wasn’t ready for this day.

    • Can you imaging a President talking like that? I’m not answering because the law says I don’t have to.
That’s a true man of the people!

And this “retroactive retirement” stuff is priceless.

    • A few would profit hugely from it – and the rest is distracted with social issues and misinformation probably. But, the concept of voting against your own interests has long traditions in American Politics. Hopefully that is about to change for the better these days.

  4. The National Review, arguably the most prominant conservative magazine in the US has called for Romney to release his tax returns. Who will be the next conservative to request this disclosure? His VP nominee?

    • lol – talk about mismanaging things.

It reminds me of a great novel from Italo Calvino – “The Baron in the Trees”. It’s about a kid who escapes dinner and climbs up in a tree to avoid eating his peas.
Then hours becomes days and weeks – and suddenly he can’t come down without looking like a complete fool, and increasingly so as time passes. Thus he’s stuck in the trees and establishes a life there.
