The Conservative Party has hired Barack Obama’s campaign manager Jim Messina for its general election campaign team, BBC Newsnight has learned.

Sources confirmed that he would act as a campaign strategy adviser to the Conservative party.

A lifelong Democrat, Mr Messina masterminded the US president’s successful 2012 re-election campaign.

The political parties in Westminster are readying themselves for the general election, now under two years away.

  1. David Cameron now has four election campaign managers. His chief opponent, Ed Miliband, has none. The 2015 election is shaping up to be a one-horse race and that is not good news for democracy.

      • Cameron promised one in 2015, but I do not think it’s a good idea. Most of the electorate know little about the EU, its complexities and the benefits it brings to the UK. Most of what they hear is the loud clamouring from eurosceptics like UKIP and the Conservative backbenchers, so it’s hardly a level playing field. I believe a departure from the EU will be bad for Britain and the other members. The Union needs reform, certainly, but that will not come about if we storm off like a spoilt child. This is why the Labour Party needs to get its act together and offer the people an alternative to secession.

      • Interesting. And I’m still wondering whether Cameron is trying to buy time in regards to the public or to the conservative backbenchers…
UK leaving all together sounds unthinkable.. maybe a member “light” could be the result?

And I’ve always enjoyed Sir Humphrey’s (Yes, Minister) rationale for joining the Union – simply because UK is against it, and to make a pig’s breakfast of the whole thing.
