(Reuters) – Russia said on Thursday it was sending warships to the Mediterranean, but denied it was beefing up its naval force there as Western powers prepare for military action against Syria.

Interfax news agency quoted a source in the armed forces’ general staff as saying Russia, Syria’s most powerful ally, was deploying a missile cruiser from the Black Sea Fleet and a large anti-submarine ship from the Northern Fleet in the "coming days".

Any strengthening of the navy’s presence could fuel tension, especially as the United States has said it is repositioning naval forces in the Mediterranean following an alleged chemical weapons attack which it blames on Syrian government forces.

    • Good post! So to the tricky part.. what do you think Cameron should do next? Bomb a little and see what happens – or stay out of it?

I’m partly leaning towards do nothing.. let Assad slaughter his population.. because the alternative is worse..

    • Exactly.. a middle course might be to keep the conversation going but drag out time for some weeks and months. To do nothing but pretend otherwise.

As for the Tottenham guy, at least he has 200 nukes in his pocket, but then again… the US will at some point ask themselves about the price of the support.. and General MacArthur famously told Pres. Truman to NEVER establish a jewish state in the Middle East – as it would create “centuries of violent conflict”.

  1. Russia will stand by and do virtually nothing about this…..

There Navy might just be taking readings on the American fire power….
Oh, they might be signalling the Syrian’s if a attack begins….

    • Good point. But Putin seems to have a string of “wins” seen from a domestic perspective. Granting asylums to western “freedom seekers” and sending warships that makes Obama balk. For what it’s worth.
